South Africa has given travellers another reason to pay attention.
In an announcement published on 30 September 2026, the Department of Tourism reported that South Africa welcomed 1,005,286 international tourists during August 2026, an increase of 7.4% compared with August 2025. From January to August, international tourist arrivals reached 7,581,455, up 11.7% on the corresponding period last year.
Those are national figures, reflecting arrivals across South Africa as a whole. They count international tourists (overnight visitors), rather than all border crossings, and are not Why Not Africa Tours guest numbers. But they offer a wonderful starting point for a more personal question:
What would you like to discover here?
Perhaps it is a coastline you have never followed beyond your usual holiday town. A mountain pass you have admired in photographs but never driven. A quiet campsite beside the Orange River. Or a flower-season journey you have been promising yourself for years.
At Why Not Africa Tours, these are the kinds of experiences we bring together: guided journeys through the West Coast, Cederberg, Namaqualand, Richtersveld and Kalahari, with adventures extending into Namibia. Our range includes self-drive 4×4 touring, lodge stays, camping expeditions, hosted bus journeys and cycling experiences.
The appeal is not simply where you go. It is how the journey feels while you are there.
The experiences below describe our planned itineraries. Routes, accommodation, meals and activities are confirmed for each departure and may change with weather, access and local conditions.
The West Coast: Seafood, Sandy Tracks and Places with Character

The West Coast is not a destination to hurry through.
On our West Coast: Salt & Sand 4×4 Lodge Tour, the journey begins in Paternoster before following the coast through places such as St Helena Bay, Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay towards Lamberts Bay. Whitewashed village scenery gives way to stretches of Atlantic coastline, and the day brings something worth arriving hungry for: a seafood meal at the open-air Muisbosskerm restaurant.
It is a fitting introduction to the journey. Food is not merely a stop between attractions here. It is part of experiencing the West Coast.
There is adventure, too. The lodge itinerary includes sand driving at The Dunes outside Lamberts Bay before continuing through Doringbaai and Strandfontein, with lunch at Lutzville Wine Farm. Further north, the route explores the Namaqua coastline, including Koringkorrelbaai and the Spoeg River caves, before reaching Hondeklipbaai. Dinner at Rooi Spinnekop and an overnight stay at Honnepondokkies bring the day back to the pleasures of good food and a comfortable place to settle.
The scenery continues to change as the journey turns inland. Coastal tracks give way to rocky passes, guest farms and Namaqualand’s mountain landscapes. Houthoop and Nigramoep introduce a different kind of hospitality, while Kleinzee, Port Nolloth and Okiep add stories of diamonds, copper and the communities shaped by those industries.
This is the attraction of a West Coast journey with us: the combination.
You can enjoy the satisfaction of driving your own 4×4, discover places beyond the main road, share a memorable meal and finish the day somewhere welcoming. The adventure does not end when you park the vehicle. Sometimes that is when the evening’s best conversations begin.
The expanded 2027 Explorer is a separate seven-night, eight-day option, adding time around Nigramoep and Schaaprivier Canyon.
The Cederberg: Mountain Roads, Rock Art and Lodge Evenings

The Cederberg offers a different atmosphere altogether.
Our Cederberg: Sandstone & Stories 4×4 Lodge Tour combines mountain passes, sandstone scenery and cultural heritage with a route from Ceres to Clanwilliam. Kagga Kamma, Kromrivier and Yellow Aloe Guest House provide the overnight settings, while Stadsaal Caves, nearby San rock art and Wuppertal bring depth to the days between them.
The pleasure is in having time to notice the changes.
At Stadsaal, the shapes of the sandstone invite you to stop and look. At the rock art sites, the landscape becomes more than scenery: it holds traces of the people who knew it long before today’s roads and lodges. Wuppertal adds the character of a historic settlement, with whitewashed cottages and local craftsmanship.
Then there is the comfortable rhythm of the journey itself. Lunch at Mount Ceder, time at Kromrivier, a meal at Cederberg Oasis and an evening in Clanwilliam give the trip a balance between exploring and settling in. These stops also feature in the Cederberg cycling itinerary, where discovering the mountains from the saddle adds another dimension.
For travellers who enjoy beautiful roads but do not want every day to feel like an endurance test, that balance matters.
There is room for adventure, but also room to appreciate it: to sit beside the river, enjoy dinner, talk about the day and wake up ready for the next stretch of mountain country.
Namaqualand: Flowers, Local Knowledge and More Than a Seasonal Photograph

Namaqualand’s flower season deserves its reputation, but a rewarding flower tour involves more than driving north and hoping to find colour.
Our Namaqualand: Desert in Colour 4×4 Lodge Tour uses the Okiep area as a base for exploring destinations such as Goegap Nature Reserve, Kamieskroon and the Skilpad section of Namaqua National Park. Crucially, the itinerary can respond to flower conditions and weather, rather than treating every day’s route as fixed regardless of what is happening in the veld.
That is where local knowledge becomes part of the experience.
The aim is not simply to take you to a famous name on a map. It is to make informed decisions about where to spend the day, where to stop and how to give the landscape the attention it deserves.
And the flowers are only one part of Namaqualand’s story.
The journey also includes a Richtersveld excursion, mountain scenery and the region’s copper-mining heritage. In Okiep, the historic smokestack, Cornish Beam Pump and hotel mining museum connect the surrounding landscape to the people and industries that shaped it. Back at the hotel, shared dinners and a relaxed pizza evening give guests time to enjoy one another’s company beyond the day’s sightseeing.
Flower displays remain a natural, seasonal experience, not something anyone can guarantee. That makes thoughtful guiding more valuable, not less. The combination of flowers, heritage, landscapes and hospitality gives the journey substance beyond a single photograph.
For travellers drawn to the coastline as well as flower country, our West Coast: Salt & Wildflowers 4×4 Lodge Tour brings those two interests together.
The Richtersveld: Desert Mountains and Nights Beside the River

Some holidays are about adding more to the day. A Richtersveld journey can be about appreciating what happens when there is less.
Less traffic. Fewer distractions. More attention to the road, the landscape and the people travelling alongside you.
Our Richtersveld: Desert Peaks & River Nights 4×4 Camping Tour explores mountain passes, Nama settlements and remote terrain, with camps including Tierhoek, De Hoop, Kokerboomkloof and Richtersberg. The route brings together the Orange River, rocky tracks, quiver trees and the changing shapes of the desert mountains.
At De Hoop, the river becomes part of the camping experience. At Kokerboomkloof, boulders and quiver trees create a very different setting. Travelling between them makes clear that the Richtersveld is not one uniform stretch of desert. It is a succession of landscapes, each worth slowing down for.
This is a journey for people who enjoy participating in their adventure.
You drive the terrain. You settle into camp. You experience the shift from a day of exploration to an evening outdoors.
The reward is not polished luxury. It is the feeling of having travelled somewhere that asks you to be present.
From Pella towards the Atlantic: An Expedition with a Different Rhythm
For travellers drawn to a longer wilderness journey, our Namaqualand: River to Atlantic 4×4 Camping Expedition follows another compelling thread through the Northern Cape.
The itinerary begins in the Klein Pella area, includes a visit to Pella’s Roman Catholic church and crosses Charles Pass before following the Orange River through a succession of remote landscapes.
Here, the terrain becomes part of the story.
The Khamgab section includes rocky and sandy driving, while riverside camps allow you to settle close to the water. Later, the journey reaches Bushwacked near Vioolsdrif, continues through Hell’s Pass and takes in the Richtersveld’s mountain scenery. At Bakkranse, a cave-like mountain camping setting offers an overnight experience far removed from a conventional hotel stop.
By the time the route reaches Port Nolloth for a seafood lunch beside the ocean, the Atlantic feels like a new chapter after the river and mountains.
For the right traveller, that progression is the attraction: not simply visiting individual places, but experiencing the connections between them.
The Kalahari: Red Dunes, Wildlife and Unexpected Discoveries

The Kalahari is easy to imagine as a wildlife destination. Our Kalahari: Red Sands & River Roads 4×4 Lodge Tour reveals more of its personality.
Beginning in Upington, the itinerary includes Loch Maree and the Zoutpanput salt pans, a visit to Koppies Kraal Camel Dairy, time at the Kalahari Trails Meerkat Sanctuary and exploration in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It also brings guests to Dreghorn and Molopo, with a cultural evening at Erin Game Farm and a farewell lunch and wine tasting in Upington.
That variety makes the journey more than a series of game drives.
A working camel farm offers a glimpse of an unexpected side of life in the region. The meerkat visit introduces guests to the animals’ behaviour and conservation. The salt pans bring a striking contrast to the red dunes, while the Kgalagadi offers time to watch for wildlife in a very different setting.
At Dreghorn, dune driving and a sunset cheese-and-wine experience bring the landscape into the evening. At Erin Game Farm, the itinerary includes a meal at Aunt Koera’s Kitchen and a San cultural performance, adding food and human stories to the journey.
Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed. But the anticipation of what might appear, alongside the scenery, local stops and hospitality, is part of the pleasure.
The Kalahari invites you to look carefully, listen and allow the experience to unfold.
Augrabies to Kgalagadi: Waterfalls, Hot Springs and Wildlife Country
Our Augrabies to Kgalagadi: Falls & Red Sands 4×4 Lodge Tour offers a distinct Northern Cape journey, connecting river landscapes with desert wildlife country.
The itinerary begins at Khamkirri near Kakamas and includes the natural hot springs at Riemvasmaak and a visit to Augrabies Falls. From there, it continues into the Kalahari, with excursions into the Kgalagadi towards the Mata-Mata and Nossob areas.
The contrast is what makes the route so appealing.
One part of the journey is shaped by water, rocky gorges and the Orange River. Another is about open landscapes, red sand and the patient search for wildlife.
The itinerary pairs those experiences with lodge stays, meals together and a San cultural evening. It is an option for travellers who want the excitement of exploring in their own 4×4 without making camping the centre of the holiday.
Our Bus Tours: You Do Not Need to Own a 4×4 to Join the Adventure

Perhaps you love the sound of these destinations, but not the idea of driving them yourself.
That is exactly where our hosted bus tours come in.
They offer a different way to participate: enjoy the scenery, join the visits, share the meals and let someone else take responsibility for the driving.
On the West Coast: Salt & Stories Bus Tour, highlights include Muisbosskerm, Bird Island Nature Reserve at Lamberts Bay, Lutzville Vineyards, Hondeklipbaai and the Diamond Coast. Time at Nigramoep includes exploration of the Schaaprivier Canyon, while the journey through Namaqualand also introduces guests to Okiep’s mining heritage.
The Namaqualand: Colours & Culture Bus Tour combines flower-season travel with heritage and regional scenery. Its itinerary includes Clanwilliam, the Skilpad section of Namaqua National Park, Goegap, mining towns and a hosted 4×4 excursion into the Richtersveld. This is not simply transport to a flower-viewing spot. It is a varied journey through the region.
The Kalahari: Red Sands & Falls Bus Tour connects Augrabies and the Kgalagadi with Upington and Kimberley. Alongside wildlife viewing and a San cultural evening, the itinerary includes the Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum, adding another layer of Northern Cape history.
For couples, friends or travellers who prefer to leave the driving to someone else, the invitation is simple: owning an off-road vehicle should not be the deciding factor in whether you explore.
Cycling and E-Bike Adventures: Experience More than the View through a Window

There is a different quality to experiencing a landscape from a bicycle.
You are not only looking at the scenery. You are moving through it, noticing the surface beneath your wheels and feeling the changing air.
Our West Coast: Salt & Saddles 4×4 & eBike Tour combines riding sections with vehicle travel. The itinerary includes coastal riding towards Doringbaai, lunch at Fryer’s Cove, exploration towards the Groenrivier coastline and time in the Schaaprivier Canyon. Vehicle transfers, charging stops and rider swaps on demanding sections form part of the planned hybrid experience.
It is not about pretending that every route is effortless. The terrain varies, and some sections are challenging. The attraction is combining an active experience with the broader pleasures of touring, food and time in remarkable settings.
In the mountains, our Cederberg: Sandstone & Saddles 4×4 & Cycling Tour brings together scenic driving, cycling, lodge stays and visits to places such as Stadsaal and Wuppertal. Guests can bring a suitable conventional bicycle or eBike, or choose an optional eBike rental.
This is an adventure for people who want their holiday to include movement and discovery, without making cycling the only thing the journey is about.
Namibia: A New Landscape around Every Bend

For travellers ready to venture beyond South Africa, our Namibia journeys extend the experience into another extraordinary setting.
The Namibia: Dunes & Shipwreck Shores 4×4 Lodge Tour travels from the Fish River Canyon region through southern Namibia towards Sesriem, Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. It continues through the Kuiseb landscape to Swakopmund, then follows the Skeleton Coast before turning inland towards Palmwag, Damaraland and Spitzkoppe.
The journey is built around contrasts.
Dunes give way to the Atlantic. A desert road leads to a coastal town. The coast gives way again to inland plains and the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe.
Time in Swakopmund offers a change of pace, with a free day to explore the town or choose optional activities. Later, the itinerary allows time to explore Spitzkoppe’s rock formations, viewpoints and rock art sites rather than treating it as a passing photograph.
A separate Namibia: Dunes & Shipwreck Shores 4×4 Camping Tour offers the same destination route with a camping-based accommodation format. The choice is between two different ways of experiencing the journey, not between adventure and no adventure.
For some travellers, a lodge room is the ideal place to end the day. For others, settling into camp is part of the reason they came.
A Day of Discovery Can Be Worthwhile, Too
Not every adventure needs to fill a week.
Our range also includes the West Coast: Salt & Wildflowers Day Tour, Namaqualand: Desert in Colour Flower Day Tour and Richtersveld: Desert Peaks Day Tour. These offer shorter introductions to flower country or desert mountain landscapes.
A shorter journey can be its own experience, or the beginning of an interest that eventually takes you further.
Sometimes all it takes is a day somewhere unfamiliar to remind you how much there is still to explore.
What Makes the Journey with Why Not Africa Tours Special?

Look across these itineraries and a common thread emerges.
The destinations matter, but so do the details between them.
The Freedom to Explore, with a Journey Already Planned
On our guided self-drive tours, you remain behind the wheel of your own suitable vehicle. The experience brings that independence together with a planned route, a guide and a travelling group. Briefings and preparation information help establish the journey before the first day’s driving begins.
That is a different proposition from either travelling entirely alone or handing over every part of the experience.
You participate in the adventure, with an organised structure around it.
Food and Hospitality that Belong to the Place
Muisbosskerm on the West Coast. A meal at Rooi Spinnekop in Hondeklipbaai. Farm hospitality at Nigramoep. Dinner in the Cederberg. Aunt Koera’s Kitchen in the Kalahari.
These are not interchangeable meal stops. They give the different journeys their own flavour and character.
A holiday can be remembered through its meals as readily as through its photographs. We want both to be worth remembering.
More than the Obvious Attraction
A flower journey can also introduce you to mining history. A Kalahari tour can include a camel dairy, meerkats and cultural experiences. A coastal holiday can lead inland to a canyon. A mountain tour can bring you to rock art and village craftsmanship.
That variety is deliberate. The aim is to help you experience a region, rather than simply arrive at its most recognisable landmark.
Time to Enjoy the Company
A welcome over coffee. A picnic during the day. A meal after an unfamiliar road. An evening around the fire.
Our itineraries make room for these shared moments alongside the sightseeing.
You may arrive for the destination, but the people can become just as much a part of the memory.
The World Is Discovering South Africa. What Will You Discover Next?
The tourism headlines speak in millions. Your next journey does not need to.
It might begin with two people deciding that this is finally the year they will see Namaqualand in flower. Friends choosing a hosted trip because nobody wants to do the driving. A couple preparing their 4×4 for the Richtersveld. Or someone deciding that the next holiday should include a bicycle, a mountain road and somewhere memorable to stay.
There is no single correct way to travel.
There is the journey that suits you: the coast or the mountains, a lodge or a campsite, time behind the wheel or the freedom to sit back and enjoy the view.
At Why Not Africa Tours, we bring the route, the places and the experiences together. You bring your curiosity.
Explore our tours, choose the destination that captures your imagination and speak to our team about joining the journey.
Your next adventure does not have to remain a place saved on your phone.
Why not make it a place you have been?
