Tour Details
Starting in the charming fishing village of Paternoster, this 7-night guided self-drive 4×4 tour takes you north along the rugged West Coast into Namaqualand and the Richtersveld.
Expect a rewarding mix of sandy tracks, coastal scenery, remote landscapes, historic towns, warm local hospitality and comfortable lodge stays. Along the way, you will enjoy memorable meals, scenic 4×4 routes, relaxed evenings and authentic West Coast and Namaqualand experiences.
This tour is ideal for travellers who enjoy adventure, nature, good company and the comfort of returning to a proper bed each night. It is not an extreme 4×4 tour, but some sections include sand driving, remote tracks and longer travel days.
Accommodation and meal stops are carefully selected for character, comfort and location. In remote areas, flexibility is sometimes required, but that is part of what makes this journey so special.

DAY 1
Meet in Paternoster to Lambertsbay
We meet in Paternoster at 08:00 for coffee, introductions and a short tour briefing before setting off along the West Coast.
The route takes us through Paternoster, St Helena Bay, Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay before arriving in Lamberts Bay for a memorable seafood lunch at the famous Muisbosskerm. After lunch, we head into the dunes for an introductory 4×4 sand-driving session with guidance from the tour team.
Later in the day, we check in at Grootvlei Guest House for our first overnight stay.
DAY 2
Lambertsbay to Lutzville
After breakfast, we return to the dunes for another session of real sand driving, giving everyone time to settle into the rhythm of the terrain.
From there, we continue north along the West Coast, passing through coastal towns such as Doringbaai and Strandfontein before stopping for lunch at Lutzville Wine Farm. The day ends at Joetsie Lodge, where the evening is relaxed and informal with good company, warm hospitality and time around the fire.
DAY 3
Lutzville To Hondeklip Baai
Today we travel further north towards Hondeklip Bay, following scenic sandy tracks and remote coastal routes that show off the raw beauty of the West Coast.
Along the way, we enjoy sweeping views, coastal stops and interesting places such as Koringkorrelbaai and the Spoeg River Caves. On arrival in Hondeklip Bay, we enjoy dinner at Rooi Spinnekop before overnighting at Honnepondokkies in comfortable en-suite chalets.
DAY 4
Hondeklip Baai To HoutHoop
After breakfast, we leave the coastline behind and head inland through the dramatic Wildeperdekloof Pass.
This remote route offers beautiful rock formations, historic tracks and a true sense of Namaqualand’s rugged character. We travel towards Kommagas before arriving at Houthoop Guest Farm near Kleinzee, where we settle in for the evening and enjoy a hearty local dinner.
DAY 5
Houthoop To Nigramoep
After breakfast at Houthoop Guest Farm, we continue north through the historic diamond-mining towns of Kleinzee and Port Nolloth.
From the Atlantic coastline, we turn inland towards Nigramoep Slow Living Guest Farm, a special overnight stop surrounded by rugged Namaqualand landscapes. The afternoon includes a rewarding 4×4 excursion through dramatic terrain before enjoying a warm farm-style dinner hosted by the Nigramoep team.
DAY 6
Nigramoep Exploration Day
Day 6 is dedicated to exploring the spectacular landscapes around Nigramoep.
We travel through rugged Namaqualand terrain, with the option for the more adventurous to experience the farm’s homemade buggies where available. The route includes the famous Schaaprivier Canyon, dramatic viewpoints, remote valleys and excellent photo opportunities.
After a picnic-style lunch in the veld, we return to the farm for time to relax before another home-cooked dinner.
DAY 7
Richtersveld Day Tour to Okiep
After breakfast, we set off on a Richtersveld 4×4 excursion through one of South Africa’s most striking arid landscapes.
The route includes Eksteensfontein, Hell’s Pass, ancient rock formations and dramatic mountain scenery. We enjoy a packed lunch along the way and stop near the Orange River before continuing to Okiep Country Hotel for our final night.
The evening is spent enjoying dinner together and reflecting on the journey.
DAY 8
Okiep Departure Day
We enjoy one final breakfast together before ending the tour with a visit into Okiep’s rich mining history.
The morning includes the historic Cornish Beam Pump, Smokestack and Copper Museum experience where available. After the visit, we say our farewells and begin the journey home, until the next West Coast or Northern Cape adventure.
