Namaqua Eco Trail Pella To Alexander-Bay Tour

Join us for a truly immersive 7-day 4x4 camping tour along the iconic Namaqua Eco 4x4 Trail, one of South Africa’s most remote and scenic routes. Starting in Pofadder for a quick meet and greet, we wild camp for three nights along the banks of the Orange River on the Namaqua side, enjoying total off-grid serenity under the stars.
We then spend a night at the well-equipped Bushwacked campsite in Vioolsdrift before crossing over into the rugged Richtersveld. Here we camp at Tierhoek and De Hoop in the Richtersveld National Park, surrounded by dramatic mountains and ancient desert landscapes.
Our final stretch takes us to Alexander Bay and our tour ends at the Okiep Country Hotel
A perfect finish to a raw and unforgettable wilderness journey.

Itinerary

Day 1

Pofadder to Hartbeesmond

Our 7-day Orange River Eco Trail kicks off at 8:00 AM from the Pofadder Inn, where we gather for a quick meet and greet and tour briefing before setting off at 9am in our self-drive 4x4s. (Please arrange your own accommodation for the night before.)

From here, we travel west to Pella, a small but vibrant Nama community. We’ll take time to visit the historic Pella Roman Catholic Church, an architectural gem that stands in striking contrast to the surrounding desert landscape.

Day 2

Hartbeesmond to Rhamansdrif

After a hearty breakfast at Hartbeesmond, we pack up and hit the trail once again. Spirits high, we head further west along the dusty tracks toward Rhamansdrift, driving through the little community town of Witbank deep in the heart of Namaqualand’s untamed beauty.

Day 3

Rhamansdrif to Khamgab

Over the course of the first three days, we’ll cover approximately 300 km as we travel through the Namaqua side of the Eco Trail. Today, we continue our westward journey toward Khamgab River Camp. This stretch of the trail follows the dry Khamgab riverbed as it winds its way down to the Orange River. It’s slow going—true 4x4 territory—as we carefully make our way over boulders and through sandy channels, taking in the raw, untouched beauty of the landscape.

Day 4

Khamgab to Bushwacked

We continue our westward journey until we reach the N7, heading north toward Vioolsdrift, where we settle in for the night at the beautifully located Bushwhacked Camp on the banks of the Orange River.

Day 5

Vioolsdrif to Tierhoek

After Breakfast we make our way towards Eksteensfontein, passing through the rugged and scenic Hells Pass before arriving at Eksteensfontein. From there, we journey to Bakkranse, taking in the breathtaking landscapes along the way. Our first night is spent camping at Tierhoek, surrounded by the beauty of the Richtersveld.

Day 6

Tierhoek to De Hoop

.Our day begins with a hearty breakfast at Tierhoek before we pack up and set off towards Kuboes, a small but vibrant Nama community known for its rich cultural heritage and deep ties to the Richtersveld landscape. 

This remote town offers a glimpse into the traditions of the Nama people, who have lived in harmony with this rugged terrain for generations.

Day 7

De Hoop to Okiep Country Hotel

On our final day, after a hearty breakfast, we break camp and begin our journey towards Alexander Bay. Our route takes us through the breathtaking Richtersveld, a dramatic and rugged entryway into the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, offering one last taste of the region’s untamed beauty.

From Alexander Bay, we travel south along the coastal route towards Port Nolloth, where we make a brief stop to take in the seaside charm of this quiet coastal town. From there, we continue inland, making our way to the Okiep Country Hotel, where our adventure concludes.
